Answers questions and asks new ones
Author Tsukushi continues the wonderful story of Made in Abyss as the character journey down into the highly anticipated sixth layer. Up till this point, our trio of characters has had the chance to turn back and return to the surface (however painful it may be). But after passing the point of no return, their fate will now be decided by the abyss. ___ (This review may contain spoilers). Overall, I'm very happy with the direction Tsukushi is taking the story. Surprisingly, the Sixth Layer did not seem to hold as many painful consequences as the layers our heroes have already journeyed through. It's somewhat of a breather compared to the last two where Bondrewd caused exceeding trouble. With him being somewhat defeated, I expect a new threat to take his place soon enough. As per usual, Tsukushi's art is painstakingly beautiful. And his creativity with the creatures of the Abyss shines brightly with this volume. We begin to see things that even the people of Orth have never dreamed of, and I often found myself gawking (much like the main characters do) at the sheer unimaginability of what I am seeing. This manga begins to shed light and answer some of the questions we've had from the beginning about the nature of the abyss and Reg's origins. But it also asks plenty of new questions in the process. The story of the trio is now juxtaposed with some of the characters back up on the surface. Overall, it looks like Tsukushi is setting up the story to continue for a good long while still. As a final note, I was surprised at how many philosophical ideas and questions were present in this part. The Sixth Layer's economy is extremely thought-provoking and is probably the highlight of this volume for me. If you have kept up with the series, I highly recommend picking up this volume. I myself can't wait to read volume 7 in September.
It just got real, again...
The mystery sinks you deeper. I've loved Made in Abyss, my first viewing of the Anime nailed that home from it's opening scene. And as much as I loved the past two books, I couldn't help but feel a certain falling out. Bondrewd was a creepily amazing villain, the art is still superb, but the mystery of the Abyss was put aside for a battle I had to read twice over to understand. Vol. 6 has brought back that magic for me, and I look to investigate the abyss further.
Spectacular!
